The Camargue Along the water

It is also possible to visit the Camargue by boat via the sea and Petit Rhône on board Les Quatre Maries, which leaves from the Port Gardian in SaintesMaries-de-la-Mer, and takes visitors all the way to Bac du Sauvage. This guided tour offers a glimpse of the hidden nature of the superb regional park, an untamed world and fantastic biodiversity that is only accessible by boat: birds, herons, pink flamingos and also the bulls and horses grazing among the beautifully coloured ponds.

A tourist trail explains the legend of Sara, patron saint of the Gypsies and the Saintes-Maries who came to evangelise Provence, the local economy (rice growing, cattle breeding, fishing …) and cultural activities such as the Course Camarguaise, with a halt at a cattle and horse-breeding centre.

Les Quatre Maries is also an opportunity to leave SaintesMaries-de-la-Mer for a day’s big-game fishing with a professional, even beginners can participate.

Another idea of a place to visit is the Marais du Vigueirat, a unique natural sanctuary located at the junction of two outstanding ecosystems, the Rhône delta and the steppe plain of the Crau. The Marais du Vigueirat have a remarkable biodiversity with a mosaic of marshlands and outstanding natural heritage with over 3,500 animal and plant species and also herds of bulls and horses. The different Étourneau trails can be taken on stilts to La Cabane, La Palunette with two observation towers, the écofuté path, and also ethnobotanic gardens.

A great way to discover the full beauty of this national nature reserve either alone or accompanied by a nature guide in an electric minibus, on foot, by boat or in a horse-drawn carriage. And don’t forget your binoculars!
