Samuel Le Bihan Free in his mind

How did you come up with the idea for the series “Carpe Diem”?

The idea came to me during a conversation with a lawyer. I wanted to bring to life an atypical character, a lawyer who defends lost causes. After losing everything and being wrongfully imprisoned, Tom Villeneuve chooses to live fully in the present moment. I also wanted to act in a comedy with quality writing, where humor intertwines with deep themes.

Why was the role of a free and inspiring lawyer important to you?

The ideal of freedom has always fascinated me, and embodying a character in reconstruction was a stimulating challenge. Tom has to reinvent himself completely. In order to connect with his daughter, he seeks to become an inspiring and positive man. The idea of a second chance, of being able to reclaim one’s story, resonates with me particularly.

What excites you about the role of Alex Hugo?

Once again, it’s freedom! Alex, like Tom, is a man committed to justice, rebuilding himself after a trauma. This idea of destiny fascinates me. He left the Marseille police to exile himself in the mountains in search of serenity, yet remains driven by a deep moral sense.

The series has been a huge success with strong ratings for nearly 10 years. How do you explain this?

We are committed to sincerity, quality, and high standards. The majestic and wild mountain setting adds a grand and escapist touch. We film it almost like a western, which appeals greatly to viewers.

Can you share some challenges you experienced during filming?

Filming in the mountains is a demanding adventure that pushes us out of our comfort zone, facing unpredictable weather conditions and challenging access. The extreme temperatures make the shoot intense, but that’s part of the charm, especially with the stunts that I sometimes have to perform myself due to the lack of a double.

Do you have any films in preparation?

I was fortunate to direct an episode of “Alex Hugo,” which will be aired next September.

What character would you like to explore in your future projects?

I enjoy portraying powerful and complex characters like Tom or Alex. As a father, exploring fatherhood is a fascinating subject.

What are your passions outside of cinema?

I’m involved of many associations, particularly related to disability and the environment.

What would you wish for the readers of LiFE Magazine?

With the Winter Olympics in 2030 in the French Alps, I invite you to explore our beautiful mountains. Enjoy these magnificent landscapes; they are an infinite source of inspiration!
