Heritage, A Living Memory

Enhancing the region is both a national and local priority.
One of the key initiatives of the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolitan Authority is the preservation of heritage whether natural, archaeological, cultural, or embedded within the landscape itself. From iconic mountain ranges to ancient ruins, these sites tell a shared story and shape a deeply Mediterranean identity. They invite visitors to observe, to walk, and to feel the connections between nature and memory.

Sainte-Victoire: protected nature

With two designated protected sites and inclusion in the European Natura 2000 network, the Concors–Sainte-Victoire Grand Site embodies the balance between conservation and public access. It stands as one of the most emblematic natural areas in the region a living symbol to be explored.

The restoration of the Imoucha trail reflects this commitment, ensuring the long-term preservation of this exceptional site while offering a more environmentally respectful walking experience. This major route across the massif provides privileged access to the Croix de Provence and the Priory. Between pine forests, garrigue shrubland, and limestone cliffs, sunlight reveals the full strength and beauty of the Sainte-Victoire mountain.

Saint-Blaise: A journey through time

In Saint-Mitre-les-Remparts, the archaeological site of Saint-Blaise overlooks the Étang de Berre. Considered a cradle of Provence, it holds numerous remains from one of the oldest cities in France. Ancient ramparts, narrow streets, and residential ruins recount more than two millennia of history. This remarkable landscape is also home to significant biodiversity, particularly around the recently designated Citis and Pourra ponds. Saint-Blaise is a reminder that heritage is, above all, living memory.

From the summit of Sainte-Victoire to the ruins of Saint-Blaise, heritage unfolds as a sensory journey at the heart of the region.
