Isabelle Ithurburu Working girl

Since this summer, you’ve been taking on the role of stand-in presenter for the “13H” news in addition to your work on “50’Inside”. How are you managing this double responsibility?

I see it first and foremost as an incredible opportunity. Being able to do so many different things and so varied ones (since there’s also rugby!) is quite rare in this profession, so I’m truly enjoying it. I’ve never been fond of routine, so I’m certainly being kept on my toes! That said, I try to remain the same person in every setting, even on the “13H” news, where the topics are often less lighthearted than in entertainment or sports.

You started out in sports journalism, particularly in rugby. How did those early experiences shape the way you tell stories today?

It’s true that I learned this job by doing it. I didn’t have the formal journalism training at first, but I did have a real passion for the sport I was talking about. Quite naturally, I began telling stories with that passion, without overthinking it. I think I spoke to people very simply as if we were chatting at the table or in their living room, without distance. I try to keep that same approach today, even when I’m covering heavier subjects on the “13H” news, which isn’t always easy! I probably wouldn’t be able to do it if I hadn’t started in sports.

You’re also deeply involved in charitable causes. Which projects are closest to your heart right now?

I’m the ambassador of L’Estelada, a small association from Béarn that helps children with disabilities and their families. I also support the work of the Alzheimer Foundation, which is vast and still lacks enough visibility. In general even if I sometimes run out of time I try to accept every opportunity to help. I’m very lucky: I have my health, a healthy little girl, and a fulfilling job. But I know that everything can change in an instant, so I feel it’s important to give back as much as I can and use my platform to shed light on these causes.

How do you maintain a genuine connection with the audience, especially in high profile programs like the “13H” news?

I don’t really have a method I think that’s just who I am! I find it hard not to be natural, even in my everyday life (though it sometimes works against me!). Honestly, I was afraid I might lose that spontaneity on the “13H” news, because it’s such a big responsibility and there are so many expectations… But judging from the feedback I received over the summer, I think viewers recognized the same Isabelle they see in rugby or on “50’Inside”!

What made you want to host the new version of “Stars à domicile”, and what appealed to you most about the project?

Well, first of all, I was a huge fan of the show back in the day! Having the chance to bring it back to life and allow a new generation to experience those emotions is amazing. And since I love authenticity and real life contact, it was a perfect fit: no studio, no spotlights just being out in the field, like in my early days, with that genuine connection between ordinary people and celebrities. I had so much fun filming all those surprises!

Outside the studio, when you have a weekend to relax, where do you like to go to recharge?

I have a feeling the Southwest holds a special place in your heart! (smile) I mostly love being surrounded by the people I care about, wherever that may be. But yes, if I had to choose, nothing beats going back to my roots! Béarn, the Basque Country, Bigorre… I try to go back as often as possible. I love the simplicity and warmth of the people there, the food (a lot!), and the easygoing way of life.

What would you like to wish LiFE Magazine’s readers?

Since we just mentioned it good health, first of all! It’s the most important thing if you want to enjoy everything else. Also, sincere friendships, and a job or a passion that truly fulfills them that’s what helps you get through everything in life!
